Göreme Open-Air Museum is a rock settlement that hosted an intense monastic life from the 4th century A.D. to the 13th century. In this valley-like area, churches, chapels, dining halls, and living quarters were carved into the rock formations. Göreme Valley is considered the birthplace of the monastic education system, which later spread to regions such as Soğanlı, Ihlara, and Açıksaray. In the churches, geometric decorations from the early periods of Christianity can be seen in the first layers of paint, while frescoes from later periods depict scenes from the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. At the Göreme Open-Air Museum, visitors can explore the Girls’ and Boys’ Monastery, the Church of St. Basil, the Apple Church, the Church of St. Barbara, the Snake Church, the Dark Church, the Sandal Church, and the Buckle Church. Since December 6, 1985, the Göreme Open-Air Museum has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural significance.
